Risan, located in the inner part of the Bay of Kotor, surrounded by high mountains, has always been strategically well-positioned for urban development. The abundance of fresh water and a good spot for docking ships also contributed to this development.<\/span><\/p>

Risan is <\/span>mentioned as early as the 3rd century AD as a fortified Illyrian town. Classical authors connect Risan with the myth of the legendary founders of Boeotian Thebes, Cadmus and Harmonia, who came to this area inhabited by the Illyrian tribe of the Enchele.<\/span><\/p>

Strabo refers to the Bay of Kotor as \"Sinus Risonicus\", a name that persisted until the Middle Ages. Polybius, in his work <\/span>The Histories<\/em>, provides important information about Risan, mentioning Queen Teuta who took refuge in this invincible town.<\/span><\/p>

Risan is one of the richest, yet least explored archaeological sites in <\/span>Montenegro. The first explorations were conducted by Sir A. Evans during the uprising in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where he found artifacts from the Hellenistic period at the Carine site.<\/span><\/p>

Between the two world wars, Du\u0161an Vuksan, then director of the National Museum in Cetinje, discovered the foundations of a Roman \"villa urbana\" with mosaics and a depiction of the Greek god of sleep, Hypnos.<\/span><\/p>

After World War II, in 1950, students of the Art School in Herceg Novi continued excavations at the \"Carine\" site, discovering remains of larger sacred buildings and architectural decorations. In 1968, a team from the National Cultural Heritage Protection Institute from <\/span>Cetinje found the foundations of large unidentified buildings, remains of a well, and fragments of marble statues.<\/span><\/p>

Architectural elements found in Risan indicate three construction phases: the pre-urban phase with Illyrian habitation, the proto-urban phase with Hellenistic influence, and the urban phase during Roman domination. Excavations revealed the foundations of buildings that belonged to the Roman forum, squares, and public buildings, as well as traces of the water supply system.<\/span><\/p>

Following the example of Greek-Hellenistic cities, it is possible that Risan had its own theatre. The hypothetical location of the theatre is near the ancient settlement, outside the city walls.
